Iraq Participates in the Opening of the 137th Session of the Council of the International Maritime Organization in London

The Republic of Iraq participated in the opening of the 137th session of the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which commenced on Monday, 6 July 2026, at the Organization’s headquarters in London and will continue until 10 July 2026. Iraq’s participation forms part of its ongoing engagement in the work of the International Maritime Organization.

The opening session was attended by the Secretary-General of the Organization, representatives of Member States, and representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations participating as observers.

The agenda included consideration of a proposal submitted by the IMO Secretariat to amend the Council’s Rules of Procedure in line with recent organisational developments, following a request put forward by a number of Council Member States.

The Republic of Iraq was represented at the session, on behalf of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the International Maritime Organization, by Maritime Attaché Captain Mazen Al-Kaabi, who participated in the proceedings and deliberations. Iraq’s participation reflects its continued commitment to maintaining an active presence within the Organization and contributing to international efforts aimed at advancing the maritime transport sector and strengthening international maritime cooperation
