Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom Meets Chair of the UK Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee

His Excellency Dr Salih Husain Ali Al-Tamimi, Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom, met with Ms Karen Bradley MP, Chair of the UK Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee, at the Palace of Westminster on 7 July 2026. The meeting focused on ways to strengthen cooperation between the Republic of Iraq and the United Kingdom in the fields of migration, security and parliamentary relations.
During the meeting, His Excellency underscored the importance of advancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Migration signed between the two countries, in a manner that contributes to combating irregular migration and human trafficking. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining close coordination between the competent authorities in both countries. Furthermore, he called for the United Kingdom’s support in facilitating visa procedures for Iraqi students wishing to pursue postgraduate studies at British universities, thereby strengthening academic and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments, particularly the security and economic situation in the region. They stressed the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, given its direct impact on the stability of both the Iraqi economy and the global economy, and emphasised the need to pursue dialogue and diplomacy in order to achieve sustainable solutions that promote regional security and stability.
Ms Karen Bradley reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Iraq in the areas of migration and security, commending the efforts of the Iraqi Government to strengthen security and stability and combat organised crime.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue coordination and consultation in support of their shared interests and to further strengthen Iraqi-British relations.
