Iraq Participates in the 111th Session of the International Maritime Organization’s Maritime Safety Committee in London

The Republic of Iraq is participating in the 111th session of the Maritime Safety Committee of the International Maritime Organization, held from 13 to 22 May 2026 at the Organisation’s headquarters in London, with the participation of Member States and representatives of international organisations concerned with maritime affairs.
The session addresses a number of key issues related to enhancing international maritime safety and developing regulatory frameworks governing maritime transport, alongside discussions on challenges associated with digital transformation and reducing emissions in the maritime sector.
In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General of the Organisation, Mr Arsenio Dominguez, referred to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, affirming the Organisation’s continued efforts to support initiatives aimed at activating safe maritime corridors to facilitate the evacuation of seafarers and ensure their safety.
The meetings also included discussions on the regulatory framework for safety in relation to greenhouse gas emissions, maritime digitalisation, and the continued work towards finalising the first International Code for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS Code), which represents an important step in the development of international maritime legislation.
Iraq is represented at the meetings by the Iraqi Maritime Attaché, Captain Mazin Al-Kaabi, and First Secretary Alyaa Ihsan Al-Sayegh, responsible for the International Organisations and Multilateral Relations Portfolio in the Political Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London.
