His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom Meets Labour Party MP John Slinger

His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom, Dr Salih Husain Ali Al-Tamimi, met with the Labour Party Member of Parliament, Mr John Slinger, at the Palace of Westminster in London on 18 May 2026. During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the United Kingdom across a range of political, economic, cultural and security fields, in line with the shared interests of the two friendly countries.

At the outset of the meeting, both sides affirmed the depth and strength of Iraqi-British relations and underscored the importance of continuing to advance bilateral cooperation and broaden the horizons of partnership, particularly in the fields of investment, trade exchange, education and culture, as well as enhancing security cooperation and the exchange of expertise in a manner that contributes to supporting stability and development.

The meeting also addressed the latest political and security developments in the Middle East region. Both sides stressed the importance of adopting dialogue and diplomatic means in addressing regional crises and working to ease tensions in a way that enhances regional and international security and stability, while safeguarding the security of international maritime routes, the stability of the global economy and supply chains.

His Excellency the Ambassador reaffirmed Iraq’s steadfast position calling for respect for the principles of international law and its balanced policy based on supporting regional security and stability, rejecting escalation and wars, and emphasising the importance of international cooperation in confronting shared challenges.

Mr Slinger commended the pivotal role played by Iraq in the region, affirming the United Kingdom’s commitment to continuing cooperation and coordination with Iraq on various issues of mutual interest.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed on the importance of maintaining communication and joint coordination and of further strengthening bilateral cooperation in a manner that serves the interests of the two friendly countries.

The meeting was attended on the Iraqi side by First Secretary Ahmed Mustafa and Second Secretary Noor Abdulzahra Mohammed from the Political Section. Mr Toby Bell attended on the British side
