The Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in London meets the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)

His Excellency Dr Salih Husain Ali Al-Tamimi, Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom, met with Ms Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), at the Bank’s headquarters in London on 5 May 2026. The meeting focused on exploring prospects for strategic cooperation between the Embassy and the Bank in support of the diversification and development of the Iraqi economy.

His Excellency the Ambassador expressed his aspiration to work closely with the EBRD to implement a joint action plan centred on enabling the private sector to play an effective role in Iraq’s economic development. He also emphasised the importance of strengthening institutional and financial capacities in the areas of governance and compliance, as well as activating dedicated financial packages allocated to Iraq.

The Ambassador further called for coordination to organise joint investment conferences, bringing together companies and investors to highlight the opportunities available in Iraq.

The President of the EBRD reaffirmed the Bank’s strong commitment to supporting and empowering the private sector as a driver of economic diversification in Iraq. She noted that her team in Iraq is working directly with the private sector by providing financing and advisory services designed to ensure efficient implementation and mitigate risks.

In conclusion, both sides agreed to formalise this cooperation through regular meetings to monitor the implementation of the joint action plan.

The meeting was attended on behalf of the Embassy by Counsellor Atheer Alsaedy, and on behalf of the Bank by Ms Milica Delević, Secretary General of the EBRD, and Ms Catarina Björlin Hansen, Head of the EBRD Office in Iraq.
