Iraq Participates in IMO Working Group Meetings on Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships

The Republic of Iraq is participating in the twenty-first session of the Intersessional Working Group on Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships (ISWG-GHG 21), which is being held from 20 to 24 April 2026 at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization in London.

These meetings form part of the preparations for the eighty-fourth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the Organization. Member States are discussing a range of issues related to reducing emissions from the global maritime transport sector. In particular, the session will address the reduction of emissions in the shipping industry and the development of guidelines for implementing the proposed regulatory framework of the International Maritime Organization, with the aim of achieving net-zero emissions. The meeting will also consider the scope of work for the Fifth Greenhouse Gas Study, which is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting and shaping future environmental policies and decisions within this vital sector.

The Republic of Iraq is represented at these meetings by First Secretary Alyaa Ihsan Al-Sayegh, responsible for the International Organisations and Multilateral Relations Portfolio in the Political Section at the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London
