The Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom, Dr Salih Husain Ali Al-Tamimi, took part in the annual ceremony held at Lambeth Town Hall in London to commemorate the victims of the genocide perpetrated against the Kurdish people.

His Excellency attended at the kind invitation of Councillor Sarbaz Barznji of Lambeth Council. He was accompanied by members of the Embassy staff. The event was also attended by Member of the UK Parliament Ms Bell Ribeiro-Addy, the Leader of Lambeth Council Ms Claire Holland, as well as a number of official figures and members of the Iraqi community.

The ceremony included remembrance of the Halabja massacre and the Anfal campaign, along with the grave crimes associated with them, including forced displacement and mass killings. These events represent one of the most painful chapters in Iraq’s modern history. The chemical attack on the city of Halabja was also commemorated, having claimed the lives of thousands of innocent civilians in a crime that shocked the conscience of humanity and whose impacts remain deeply embedded in the national memory.

His Excellency the Ambassador delivered a speech in which he underscored the importance of commemorating this anniversary and reflecting on its lessons. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to upholding the values of justice and human rights, rejecting all forms of violence and genocide, and working with the international community to ensure that such crimes are not repeated in the future.

The event also reaffirmed the importance of honouring the memory of the victims, consolidating the principles of justice and human rights, and strengthening joint efforts to protect peoples from grave violations
