Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in London Discusses Capacity Building and Bilateral Cooperation with Former UK Minister Rehman Chishti

His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom, Dr Salih Husain Ali Al-Tamimi, received Mr Rehman Chishti, former Minister at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, former Member of Parliament, former Vice Chairman of the Conservative Party, and former Prime Minister’s Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, at the Embassy on 15 April 2026.
During the meeting, a number of issues of mutual interest were discussed, foremost among them Iraqi–British relations and ways to advance and further develop them across a range of fields in a manner that serves the interests of both countries. The two sides also reviewed political developments in the United Kingdom, the Middle East, and the wider international arena in light of ongoing global changes.
Mr Chishti presented his perspective on these developments, drawing on his extensive political and diplomatic experience gained through his governmental and parliamentary service. Both sides emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation and building upon the existing ties between Iraq and the United Kingdom.
The discussions further addressed a number of proposals aimed at advancing Iraqi–British relations to broader horizons, particularly in the areas of diplomatic cooperation and capacity building. In this context, the possibility of drawing on Mr Chishti’s expertise through the delivery of lectures and workshops was explored, with a view to enhancing the professional skills and capabilities of Iraqi diplomats.
