Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq in London Meets Professor Sir Bashir Al-Hashimi to Discuss Academic Cooperation

His Excellency the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom, Dr Salih Husain Ali Al-Tamimi, met with Professor Sir Bashir Al-Hashimi, Vice-President of King’s College London, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen scientific and academic cooperation between Iraq and leading educational institutions in the United Kingdom.
Professor Sir Bashir Al-Hashimi is a distinguished academic figure who was knighted in the 2025 Honours List in recognition of his outstanding contributions to engineering and education. He had previously been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2018 by Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and is also a recipient of the prestigious Faraday Medal awarded by the Institution of Engineering and Technology in the United Kingdom.
During the meeting, both sides explored avenues to advance mechanisms for cooperation in higher education and scientific research, with a particular focus on expanding opportunities for Iraqi students (especially postgraduate (PhD) candidates) in specialised fields aligned with Iraq’s developmental priorities.
The two parties also discussed the potential for implementing joint research programmes and benefiting from the advanced laboratory capabilities at King’s College London. Such collaboration would contribute to building sustainable partnerships with peer Iraqi universities and to enhancing academic and research capacities in a manner that serves the mutual interests of both friendly countries.
Emphasis was placed on the importance of future coordination with the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in London and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Republic of Iraq, with a view to strengthening the organisation of academic cooperation programmes, broadening institutional partnerships, and supporting scholarship and scientific exchange initiatives between the two sides
