Iraq Affirms Commitment to Seafarer Safety at Extraordinary Session of the International Maritime Organization

The Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Maritime Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in London, Captain Mazen Al-Kaabi, and First Secretary Alyaa Ihsan Alsayegh who oversees the International Organizations and Multilateral Relations portfolio at the Political Division in the embassy, attended the thirty-sixth extraordinary session convened by the IMO Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the Arabian Sea, and the Gulf of Oman.
During the session, a number of documents were considered, including a submission by the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf States, and Jordan addressing military activities and the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the adverse impact on seafarers in the Arabian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Oman, and the Strait of Hormuz. Participants called for de-escalation, the preservation of supply chains, and the protection of seafarers’ lives.
The Deputy Permanent Representative reaffirmed the Republic of Iraq’s firm commitment to the safety of seafarers aboard vessels detained in the region, and its dedication to ensuring their welfare, guided by humanitarian principles and in line with the IMO’s objectives of enhancing maritime safety and security of navigation.
The Maritime Attaché further noted that this commitment has been demonstrated in practice through the efforts of the personnel of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, supported by relevant authorities, who have acted promptly to provide assistance and support in rescuing ship crews involved in incidents outside territorial waters. This reflects a strong sense of responsibility and international cooperation in addressing maritime challenges.
