General Company for Ports of Iraq and International Maritime Organization (IMO) Hold Maritime Security Workshop

As a result of the ongoing efforts of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in the United Kingdom (the Permanent Mission of Iraq to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)) and its naval attaché, in cooperation with the IMO in London, a workshop titled “Guidance for the development of national maritime security legislation” was held in Basra Governorate for five days, from December 15th to December 19th, 2024.

The workshop was organized with support from the Iraqi Ministry of Transport / General Company for Ports of Iraq, in collaboration with the IMO’s Maritime Safety Division / Marine Security Unit, as part of the Integrated Technical Assistance Program for its member states.

Dr. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director-General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, stated “we have a close cooperation with the IMO, and in accordance with the SOLAS Convention for the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, the maritime security and safety workshop was held, with lectures delivered by international experts and professors in maritime affairs, ship security, and port facility security.”

At the end of the workshop, participation certificates were distributed to the employees from the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Transport, the Iraqi Maritime Authority, the National Oil Company, Basra Oil Company, the Gulf Arab Academy for Maritime Studies, and staff from the General Company for Ports of Iraq.

The workshop was attended by the IMO experts, along with the Iraqi Maritime Attaché and Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq to the IMO, Captain Mazen Al-Kaabi.
