A delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Oil visits the United Kingdom

In coordination between the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq to the United Kingdom and the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), a delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, headed by the Advisor to the Minister of Oil for Energy Affairs, Mr. Abdul Baqi Al-Salait, Mr. Naseer Aziz Jabbar/Director General of Studies and Planning, Mr. Hamza Al-Falah/Director General of the Basra Gas Company, and a representative of the Environment Council in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, visited London on 23-24/07/2024.

Over the course of two days, the Iraqi delegation held multiple meetings with British energy authorities, which included meetings with:

– Officials at the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

– North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA).

– Offshore Energy UK.

– British Petroleum Oil Company (BP).

– British Export Finance Guarantee Agency UKEF.

– European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

– The National Grid for electricity operation in the United Kingdom.

– Office of Gas and Electricity Markets OFGEM.

– A number of representatives of major British companies specialized in the field of energy.

During the meetings, Iraq’s distinguished efforts in reducing the burning of gas associated with oil and reducing emissions were reviewed, with the aim of transitioning to clean and sustainable energy, as part of the Iraqi government’s efforts to confront the increasing environmental challenges of climate change, including rising temperatures and dust storms. Opportunities for enhancing cooperation between the Republic of Iraq and the United Kingdom were also discussed to benefit from the latter’s experiences in this field, and to stress the importance of reaching a joint cooperation between the Republic of Iraq and the United Kingdom with the aim of supporting the efforts of the Iraqi government in this field.

On the sidelines of the visit, the delegation held a round-table meeting at the British Chatham House Institute, during which a number of experts, academics and specialists were hosted to discuss the issue of energy in Iraq.
