Iraqi Embassy in Kuala Lumpur Discusses with PETRONAS the Expansion of its Investment Activities in Iraq

On 9 December 2025, the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Kuala Lumpur received a technical delegation from Malaysia’s PETRONAS, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen engagement with institutions and companies operating within its jurisdiction and to establish effective channels of communication that support bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Counsellor Ahmed Ghanem Abduljabbar, welcomed the delegation members, which included Ms. Sarah Hassan, Senior Manager; Mr. Tengku Fadzil Tengku Zainuddin, Manager; and Ms. Inja Margaret Bucking, Executive Officer at the Foreign Missions Desk under the Strategic Relations and Communications Division of PETRONAS’ Northern and Central Office.

The meeting began with an exchange of cordial greetings, during which Mr. Abduljabbar expressed his appreciation for the delegation’s visit and affirmed the Embassy’s continuous readiness to broaden avenues of cooperation with Malaysian institutions, particularly companies with active investment portfolios in Iraq. He highlighted the important role played by PETRONAS in developing the Gharraf Oil Field in Dhi Qar Province—one of the key projects supporting Iraq’s energy sector.

For their part, the Malaysian delegation provided an overview of PETRONAS’ operations in Iraq, commending the country’s ongoing economic progress and its increasingly attractive investment environment that continues to draw leading international companies. The delegation described Iraq as “a fertile ground for opportunities,” expressing PETRONAS’ interest in expanding its activities within the Iraqi market.

The Chargé d’Affaires a.i. proposed the formation of an official company delegation to visit Baghdad for meetings with relevant government authorities to explore further avenues of cooperation. He also affirmed the Embassy’s readiness to provide the necessary facilitation in coordination and communication.

It was agreed during the meeting that PETRONAS will host the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at an upcoming workshop dedicated to presenting the company’s activities and investment projects in Iraq, in addition to arranging further meetings with a number of its senior executives, with the aim of strengthening the partnership between the two sides and sustaining institutional engagement.
