Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Discusses Regional Developments and Their Implications with Head of the European Union Mission to Iraq

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, met with the Head of the European Union Mission to Iraq, Ambassador Klemens Semtner, on Sunday, 29 March 2026, at MOFA headquarters.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the latest regional developments in light of the recent escalation between Iran and the “Israeli entity,” as well as the role played by the United States in this context. They also reviewed the repercussions of this escalation on the security and stability of the region, particularly in the Gulf region, and its potential impact on the political and economic situation in Iraq.

H.E. the Minister stressed that the continuation of tensions in the region could directly affect the Iraqi economy, particularly with regard to oil export operations through vital transit routes, and the potential price fluctuations or logistical challenges that could impact public revenues. H.E. further noted that any disruption in oil revenues could affect the government’s ability to meet its financial obligations, including the payment of salaries for public employees and pensioners. This, H.E. emphasized, necessitates intensified international efforts to prevent further escalation and to ensure the stability of energy markets.

H.E. the Minister explained that Iraq is going through a delicate and sensitive phase and finds itself in a complex situation as a result of escalating regional tensions, which requires international support to shield it from the repercussions of these crises. H.E. also pointed out that continued escalation could negatively affect the internal security situation. H.E. further reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to pursuing a balanced policy based on distancing itself from regional conflicts, calling for the adoption of dialogue and diplomatic means to contain crises in a way that enhances regional peace and security.

In this context, H.E. the Minister called on the European Union to play a more effective role by presenting an international initiative aimed at halting the war, containing escalation, and bringing the concerned parties to the negotiating table, thereby enhancing prospects for de-escalation and preventing further regional tensions. H.E. emphasized the importance of the EU’s role in supporting de-escalation efforts and working with international partners to maintain regional stability.

For his part, the Head of the European Union Mission expressed the EU’s support for Iraq’s efforts to enhance stability, underscoring the importance of continued coordination and cooperation in addressing shared challenges.
