Fuad Hussein and Spanish Foreign Minister Discuss War Repercussions and Global Energy Crisis

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, held a phone call on Monday, February 9, 2026, with the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. José Manuel Albares, during which they discussed the ongoing developments in the region and the repercussions of the ongoing war on regional security and stability.

In this context, H.E. the Spanish Foreign Minister affirmed Spain’s support—both government and people—for the Iraqi people and their government in confronting major challenges, noting his country’s position calling for an end to the war, de-escalation, and a ceasefire.

H.E. Minister Albares also outlined Spain’s stance on the ongoing war, explaining that Spain has been opposed to the outbreak of the war from the beginning and continues to stress the necessity of reaching an immediate ceasefire, given the serious consequences the war poses for the region and the world.

The two sides discussed the risks associated with the continuation of the war, stressing that the objectives of prolonging it remain unclear and that extending the conflict could lead to further escalation and instability in the region.

They also pointed out that the continuation of the war could exacerbate the global energy price crisis, potentially triggering new economic crises worldwide, in addition to the humanitarian repercussions represented by internal displacement and refugee flows abroad, which could lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.

At the conclusion of the call, both sides stressed the importance of joint efforts, together with European countries, to develop an initiative that would help achieve a ceasefire and limit the repercussions of the war on the region and the world.
