Fuad Hussein Heads Iraq’s Delegation at the Emergency Meeting of Arab Foreign Ministers and Reaffirms Iraq’s Refusal to Be Drawn into the Conflict

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein headed the delegation of the Republic of Iraq participating in the extraordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, held via videoconference on Sunday, 8 March 2026, to discuss the attacks that targeted several Arab countries amid the ongoing war in the region.

In a speech delivered during the meeting, H.E. the Minister condemned the attacks that targeted various areas across Iraq, stressing that the aim of these aggressive strikes is to push Iraq into the ongoing war in the region—a war that Iraq condemns and calls to be stopped. H.E. explained that Iraq’s policy is based on rejecting wars and believing in resolving conflicts through negotiations and diplomatic means.

He noted that the Republic of Iraq has been and continues to be one of the key supporters of negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, explaining that the Republic of Iraq condemns the ongoing military campaigns against the Islamic Republic of Iran, while at the same time emphasizing that expanding the scope of the war poses a threat to all countries in the region and would prolong and intensify the conflict.

H.E. the Minister affirmed the solidarity of the Iraqi government with brotherly Arab states, reiterating the Republic of Iraq’s complete rejection of the attacks that targeted some Arab countries and calling for respect for national sovereignty and adherence to international law to avoid further escalation in the region. H.E. stressed that the Republic of Iraq has not been and will not be part of the conflict, and will not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against neighboring countries. H.E. added that the Republic of Iraq is working to utilize its diplomatic relations to halt the war and move toward peace, while reaffirming that attacks carried out by parties to the conflict against Iraq are condemned and rejected.

H.E. further explained that the Republic of Iraq, through its executive, legislative, and judicial authorities, attaches great importance to the security and stability of Arab countries and the region, noting that the government continues to pursue various mechanisms and measures to prevent the country from being drawn into external conflicts. H.E. also reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to protecting the security of diplomatic missions and maintaining a balanced policy aimed at consolidating security and stability.

H.E. the Minister added that dialogue and restraint represent the best path to stopping the war and sparing the countries of the region from the economic and political repercussions resulting from the continuation of the conflict. H.E. warned of the dangers surrounding developments in the Strait of Hormuz and their direct impact on the interests of Iraq, the region, and the world, as well as the potential consequences that may follow, including crises in energy supplies and prices, armed chaos across the region, and waves of displacement or mass migration.

H.E. the Minister concluded his remarks by stressing that the region today is in urgent need of wisdom, dialogue, and serious efforts to preserve regional stability and security, calling for an end to the conflict and the launch of a genuine dialogue process. H.E. urged the parties to the conflict to immediately halt military operations and resort to diplomatic solutions.
