Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets U.S. Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights
On Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, met with Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Ms. Uzra Zeya, in Baghdad. During the meeting, they reviewed the outcomes of Prime Minister’s visit to the United States, in addition to topics of common concern.
Under Secretary Zeya, praised the steps taken by Iraq, which reflect its commitment to democracy and the promotion of human rights, stressing that the partnership of the United States of America and Iraq is the foundation for democracy and human rights institutional building, Ms. Zeya referred to some Iraqi legislations and the extent of its consistency with Iraq’s international obligations in the field of human rights and its international presence.
On his part Minister Fuad Hussein, affirmed that Iraq had come a long way in the field of democratic construction for its institutions, and that its people have suffered massive human rights violations under the previous regime, and Iraq is working to make human rights a culture by providing the appropriate atmosphere for its sustainability, and seeks to strengthen its presence in international forums, as well as clarify its views in a way that serves the development of its foreign relations.
As for legislations the Minister stressed that this issue concerns the Iraqi side, and the culture of Iraqi society must be taken into consideration, noting Iraq’s keenness on protecting and developing relations with other countries on the basis of common interests.
