FM Receives UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Representative

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, received on Monday, 5 October 2026, Ms Mary Yamashita, the High-Level Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for the implementation of Security Council Resolution (2792) 2025.

At the outset of the meeting, the Minister expressed the Republic of Iraq’s appreciation for the efforts undertaken by Ms Yamashita since her appointment as the UNSG High-Level Representative, affirming Iraq’s commitment to Security Council Resolution (2792) 2025 and its continued constructive cooperation with the UN, the sisterly State of Kuwait, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Tripartite Commission, in a manner that contributes to achieving tangible results in this file.

The two sides discussed the latest developments concerning the issue of Kuwaiti missing persons and Kuwaiti property, as well as efforts being undertaken at the political, technical and operational levels. The Minister affirmed that Iraq has made, and continues to make, every possible effort and has spared no effort to determine the fate of the missing persons and locate their remains, stressing the readiness of the relevant Iraqi authorities to continue cooperation and complete joint field missions.

The Minister affirmed that the Iraqi Government is determined to continue working to resolve this file with full transparency and responsibility, reflecting Iraq’s commitment to fulfilling its humanitarian and international obligations and strengthening its fraternal relations with the State of Kuwait.

The two sides stressed the importance of maintaining close cooperation and coordination between Iraq and Kuwait, with the highest levels of transparency, while underscoring the need to identify more precisely the materials and archives to be searched for, enabling the relevant Iraqi authorities to direct their efforts more effectively and achieve tangible progress.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of the role played by the Office of the High-Level Representative in facilitating communication and coordination between Iraq, Kuwait and the relevant international parties, and in helping overcome technical and practical obstacles that may hinder progress on this file.

For her part, Ms Yamashita expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Minister for the warm reception and for the cooperation and openness demonstrated by the Iraqi side, affirming her keenness to convey Iraq’s message and positions to the Kuwaiti side during her forthcoming visit to the State of Kuwait, and to continue working diligently with the parties concerned to complete this file and achieve tangible progress in this regard.
