FM Visits Iraqi Embassy in DC; Reviews Diplomatic and Consular Work

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, visited on Monday, 28 September 2026, the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington, D.C. The visit included the Embassy building and the Consular Section, where he met with the Embassy staff and reviewed the progress of work and the efforts being made to strengthen Iraqi-American relations and follow up on issues of common interest.

The Minister emphasised the importance of enhancing the level of diplomatic performance in line with the orientations of the Iraqi Government and the MoFA priorities in implementing an open foreign policy based on mutual respect and common interests, contributing to the development of bilateral relations and expanding prospects for cooperation in various fields.

The Minister also reviewed the economic challenges facing Iraq and the region in general, amid the repercussions of the war and its impact on economic and trade conditions, particularly in light of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its effects on trade flows and energy supplies.

On the consular side, the Minister reviewed work procedures and the level of services provided to Iraqi citizens, stressing the importance of continuing to develop consular performance, modernising working mechanisms, and finding appropriate solutions to facilitate the completion of citizens’ transactions and meet their needs, as well as strengthening communication with them and following up on their affairs.

The Minister directed the need to organise the passport issuance and renewal transactions periodically in Washington, in a manner that contributes to facilitating consular procedures, providing better services to Iraqi citizens residing in the eastern states of the United States, and reducing the burdens associated with their visits to consular institutions.
