FM Meets UN Secretary-General and Commends His Efforts in Support of Iraq

Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, met with United Nations Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. António Guterres, on Friday, 25 September 2026, on the sidelines of his participation in the proceedings of the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly, held in New York.

The Minister conveyed the greetings of the Prime Minister and expressed his thanks and appreciation to the UN Secretary-General on the occasion of the approaching end of his term, commending his efforts during his tenure and the support he provided to Iraq, as well as his contribution to advancing cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations.

Mr. Hussein also expressed Iraq’s appreciation for the role played by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) since 2003 and for its contributions to supporting Iraq and assisting its institutions at various stages. The Minister underscored the importance of continuing cooperation between Iraq and the international organization in the coming phase.

It is worth noting that the Member States of the United Nations are scheduled to elect a new Secretary-General next year.

Mr. Fuad Hussein also signed the Secretary-General’s visitors’ book, expressing his thanks and gratitude to Mr. António Guterres for his support to Iraq and its people, and for his efforts to advance the purposes of the United Nations and strengthen its role in maintaining international peace and security.

For his part, the United Nations Secretary-General expressed his deep pride in Iraq, its people, and its civilization, affirming his appreciation for the relations he developed with Iraq during his tenure.

Mr. António Guterres thanked the Government and people of the Republic of Iraq for their support throughout his service at the United Nations, expressing his wishes for Iraq and its people continued progress and prosperity.
