FM Discusses Strengthening Partnership between Iraq and the United Nations with President of the UN General Assembly

The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein met with The President of the eighty-first session of the United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman, on Friday, 25 September 2026, on the sidelines of the session’s proceedings in New York.

The Minister congratulated Dr. Khalilur Rahman on assuming his duties as President of the United Nations General Assembly on 2 June 2026, wishing him success in carrying out his responsibilities. He also highlighted Dr. Rahman’s previous experience in diplomatic work and his service as Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

The Minister affirmed Iraq’s pride in its close relationship with the United Nations, its commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, and its support for the Organization’s role in maintaining international peace and security and resolving disputes through peaceful means.

The meeting addressed the phase following the conclusion of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), considering it a transition to a new phase of partnership and cooperation between Iraq and the international organization. The two sides also discussed efforts to reform and develop the United Nations system, as well as enhancing Iraq’s representation in international positions and bodies.

Mr. Hussein further affirmed Iraq’s aspiration to strengthen its participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations and discussed the possibility of Baghdad hosting a regional headquarters of the international organization.

Mr. Fuad Hussein also reviewed Iraq’s priorities in the areas of economic reform, diversification of sources of income, and improving the level of public services. He stressed the importance of continuing dialogue and mutual understanding to address regional tensions and crises, in a manner that contributes to strengthening security and stability at both the regional and international levels.
