FM Discusses Regional Developments and Oil Export Security with Indian Counterpart

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Thursday, 24 September 2026, with H.E. Minister of External Affairs of India, Mr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between Iraq and India and the importance of continuing coordination and exchanging visits in a manner that contributes to developing areas of joint cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides discussed regional developments and their implications for the security of navigation and energy supplies, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz. The Minister affirmed that Iraq is working to diversify its oil transportation routes and export outlets in a manner that enhances the security and continuity of its exports and limits their exposure to regional developments.

The meeting also addressed the importance of supporting dialogue and reducing tensions in the region. In this context, Minister Fuad Hussein referred to the possibility of the Sultanate of Oman playing an active role in facilitating communication between the parties and working to establish a dialogue track involving the Arab Gulf states, Iran and Iraq, in a manner that contributes to enhancing understanding, reducing escalation and supporting regional security and stability.
