FM Fuad Hussein Meets Armenian Counterpart to Discuss Bilateral Relations and Regional Developments

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Thursday, 24 September 2026, with H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Mr Ararat Mirzoyan, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Mr Fuad Hussein welcomed the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, expressing hope that it would contribute to enhancing security and stability in the region. The Armenian minister reviewed his country’s efforts to reach understandings that would contribute to achieving stability, while Mr Fuad Hussein affirmed Iraq’s support for joint efforts among Armenia, Türkiye, and Azerbaijan to establish positive relations that serve the security, stability, and prosperity of the region.

The Minister underscored the depth of relations between Iraq and Armenia and the shared cultural and historical ties between the two peoples, inviting his Armenian counterpart to visit Baghdad to continue consultations and enhance bilateral cooperation.

The meeting addressed ways to develop economic relations between the two countries, including the possibility of establishing an air route between them, facilitating travel procedures, and considering the conclusion of an agreement on lifting visa requirements between the two countries.

Mr Fuad Hussein also noted that the Republic of Iraq had decided to appoint an ambassador to the Republic of Armenia, affirming that this step would contribute to strengthening bilateral relations and developing areas of cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, the Armenian minister welcomed the decision, affirming his country’s keenness to pursue efforts aimed at advancing bilateral relations between Iraq and Armenia and enhancing joint cooperation.
