FM Meets German Counterpart in New York to Discuss Bilateral Relations and Regional Developments

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, with H.E. Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Mr Johann David Wadephul, on the sidelines of the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and Germany, ways to strengthen them, and prospects for enhancing joint cooperation, as well as current regional developments and their implications for the security and stability of the region.

Mr Fuad Hussein reviewed the steps taken by the Iraqi Government to strengthen Iraq’s standing and its relations with the countries of the region, contributing to regional stability and de-escalation, underscoring the importance of Iraqi-German relations and commended the support provided by Germany to Iraq during the period of confronting terrorism.

The two sides also referred to the successful visit of H.E. Prime Minister Mr Ali Al-Zaidi to Germany and the accompanying delegation, and its importance in strengthening the course of relations and cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting also addressed the repercussions of the current crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and the importance of concerted international efforts to address it and mitigate its impact on maritime navigation and the global economy.

For his part, the German minister underscored the importance of the relations between Germany and Iraq, noting Germany’s efforts to continue working with the relevant parties to contribute to reaching solutions that would mitigate the repercussions of the crisis on Iraq and the region.

The German minister commended the role played by Iraq and the efforts undertaken by Mr Fuad Hussein to bring views closer and encourage dialogue, contributing to reaching solutions that support security and stability in the region.

In the context of bilateral relations, Mr Fuad Hussein called on the German side to reconsider the travel advisories issued to German citizens concerning Iraq, in light of the notable improvement in the security situation, stressing that the continuation of these advisories affects opportunities for investment and economic cooperation between the two countries.

For his part, the German minister expressed his country’s readiness to reconsider the level of travel advisories in line with the development of relations between the two countries and the security situation in Iraq.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides discussed the importance of convening a meeting of the Iraqi-German Joint Commission, which would contribute to advancing areas of bilateral cooperation and strengthening relations between the two countries.
