FM Discusses Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Regional Developments with Azerbaijani Counterpart
H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, with H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Jeyhun Bayramov, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
At the outset of the meeting, the Azerbaijani minister congratulated Mr Fuad Hussein on the renewal of confidence in him as Foreign Minister and on the formation of the Iraqi Government.
The meeting discussed bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Republic of Azerbaijan, with both sides underscoring the importance of resuming direct flights between the two countries, which would contribute to strengthening communication and cooperation between the two peoples.
Mr Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of the participation of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), scheduled to be held in Baghdad next month, noting the importance of the meeting in enhancing coordination and consultation among Member States on issues of common interest.
The two sides also exchanged views on developments and tensions in the region and their repercussions for the countries of the region, underscoring the importance of supporting international initiatives and efforts aimed at containing crises, reducing tensions, and preventing the expansion of escalation.
