FM Meets UN Secretary-General’s Representative for Missing Kuwaiti Persons

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Representative for Missing Kuwaiti Persons, Ms Mari Yamashita, on the sidelines of his participation in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting reviewed the mandate of the UN representative in following up on developments concerning the file of missing Kuwaiti persons and discussed the latest developments regarding the work of the technical committee tasked with searching for the remains of missing persons and determining their fate.

Ms Mari Yamashita expressed her thanks and appreciation to the Iraqi Government for its warm reception and the facilities it provided to ensure the success of her mission in Iraq, commending the existing cooperation and coordination on this file.

Mr Fuad Hussein affirmed the commitment of the Republic of Iraq to the relevant international resolutions concerning the State of Kuwait, particularly those of a humanitarian nature, and to continuing efforts aimed at determining the fate of missing Kuwaiti persons.

For her part, the UN representative referred to the efforts she and her team are currently undertaking as part of preparations for the next report on developments concerning the file, which is scheduled to be presented to the United Nations Security Council at the end of next month.
