FM Fuad Hussein Discusses De-escalation Efforts and Repercussions of Strait of Hormuz Crisis with Swiss Counterpart

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, with H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Ignazio Cassis, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting addressed the course of bilateral relations between Iraq and Switzerland and ways to strengthen them, as well as coordination of efforts concerning regional developments, particularly efforts aimed at reducing the intensity of conflict and escalation in the Middle East and supporting initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue and creating conditions conducive to de-escalation.

The two sides also reviewed international and regional efforts to contain the crisis related to the Strait of Hormuz and its repercussions, particularly its impact on trade, energy, and the global economy, as well as its implications for relations among the countries of the region.

The two ministers underscored the importance of continuing coordination, exchanging views, and supporting diplomatic initiatives that could contribute to containing crises and limiting their repercussions, thereby enhancing prospects for reaching peaceful and sustainable solutions.

For his part, the Swiss minister reviewed his country’s mediation efforts and endeavours to support de-escalation in Lebanon, stressing Switzerland’s continued diplomatic efforts in this regard.

Mr Fuad Hussein noted that Iraq has suffered considerably from the repercussions of the wars and conflicts that have affected the region, and their impact on its security, stability, and economy, stressing the importance of intensifying international and regional efforts to prevent the conflict from expanding and to avoid its repercussions on the countries of the region.

The two ministers agreed to continue communication and coordination and to exchange initiatives and proposals that could contribute to addressing the ongoing crises and limiting their effects, while supporting efforts aimed at achieving de-escalation and stability in the region.
