FM Meets Iranian Counterpart on Sidelines of UN General Assembly in New York

H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, met on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, with H.E. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York.

The meeting addressed bilateral relations, as well as regional developments and the importance of continuing consultations and coordination between the two countries regarding current challenges, and supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation and promoting security and stability in the region.

Mr Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of continuing diplomatic efforts and dialogue among the parties concerned in a manner that contributes to containing tensions, preventing their further escalation, and preserving regional security and stability.

For his part, Mr Abbas Araghchi provided an overview of the contacts and discussions that had commenced between the Iranian and American sides indirectly and through a mediating country on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings in New York. The discussions aim to reduce escalation and explore ways to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation.

The meeting also addressed the outcomes of the meeting that brought together the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Türkiye, in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump, as well as the potential contribution of regional and international contacts to supporting de-escalation and dialogue efforts.

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of continuing consultations and coordination on regional developments, supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at ending escalation and preventing the further expansion of tensions, and enhancing opportunities for dialogue and the achievement of peaceful solutions, thereby contributing to consolidating regional security and stability.
