FM Fuad Hussein Meets Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Portuguese Parliament

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein, met on Friday, 3 July 2026, with the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Portuguese Parliament, H.E. Mr. José de Almeida Cesário, at the headquarters of the Portuguese Parliament in the capital, Lisbon, as part of his official visit to the Portuguese Republic.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Portuguese Republic and ways to enhance joint cooperation in a manner that would elevate relations between the two countries to broader levels. They also discussed strengthening parliamentary cooperation and activating channels of communication between the Iraqi Council of Representatives and the Portuguese Parliament.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional and international developments, particularly the repercussions of the recent war on the security and stability of the region, and its political and economic implications for the countries of the Middle East and Europe.
The two sides discussed the course of the negotiations between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran, emphasizing the importance of the continuation of dialogue and diplomacy in supporting regional stability and reducing tensions.
The meeting also addressed developments related to the Strait of Hormuz, with an emphasis on the importance of ensuring freedom of maritime navigation and the continued flow of global trade and energy supplies, given the Strait’s strategic importance to the global economy.
The two sides also discussed the current economic challenges, including the repercussions of the suspension of oil exports through the northern pipeline, the Iraqi government’s efforts to limit the resulting economic impacts, as well as the effects of regional crises on European economies, particularly the Portuguese economy.
H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein stressed the importance of reactivating the Iraqi-Portuguese parliamentary friendship committees and intensifying the exchange of visits between members of the two parliaments in a manner that enhances political and legislative dialogue and serves the shared interests of the two friendly countries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, H.E. the Minister invited the President of the Portuguese Parliament to visit Iraq, reaffirming the shared desire to enhance bilateral cooperation.
