Greek Foreign Minister Holds Phone Call with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to Discuss Recent Developments and Commend Iraq’s Diplomacy

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, received a phone call from Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Mr. George Gerapetritis, ahead of the NATO Summit scheduled to be held in The Hague on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
During the call, the Greek Foreign Minister expressed his country’s high appreciation for Iraq’s influential diplomatic role and its prominent position in pursuing a balanced policy amid the complex conflicts affecting the region. He stated, “I wanted to speak with you and exchange views ahead of the summit this evening, given the importance of your perspective on regional developments”.
Minister Gerapetritis emphasized the importance of strengthening ongoing cooperation between Iraq and Greece to prevent terrorist groups from exploiting the current circumstances to regroup. In addition he strongly condemned the terrorist attack targeting an Orthodox church in the Syrian capital, Damascus, stressing the need for unified international efforts to combat terrorism.
On his part, Minister Fuad Hussein expressed his gratitude and appreciation to his Greek counterpart for the initiative to make the call, reaffirming that Iraqi diplomacy is driven by its commitment to the security and stability of Iraq and the region, which is an essential part of its responsibilities and obligations.
Minister Hussein added that the current international reality reflects a concerning decline in adherence to international law, as the use of force has increasingly become a means of interaction between states in various parts of the world. As well the Minister noted that Iraq had previously warned that ongoing wars could trigger new conflicts, citing the war in Gaza as an example that may pave the way for escalations in Lebanon and might extend to Iran.
Minister Hussein also reaffirmed Iraq’s support for the U.S. led ceasefire initiative, expressing hope for sincere commitment to the agreement by all parties involved.
On the bilateral level, Minister Hussein described Iraqi–Greek relations as “very good,” emphasizing Iraq’s desire to further develop cooperation across various sectors.
At the end of the call, Minister Gerapetritis reiterated his thanks to Minister Hussein for the productive dialogue and confirmed his intention to visit Iraq soon on a diplomatic, political, and economic mission, accompanied by a delegation of Greek business leaders.
Minister Hussein welcomed the upcoming visit and expressed his hope for hosting him in Baghdad, and extended his thanks to him for the call and the valuable discussions.
