On Monday, June 16, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein received a phone call from the Italian Foreign Minister Mr. Antonio Tajani, during the call they discussed the latest regional developments and the repercussions of the ongoing escalation in the region.

The Italian Minister expressed his country’s deep concern regarding the rapidly unfolding events in the region, reaffirming Italy’s support for Iraq’s security and stability, and emphasizing the importance of exchanging information and points of view concerning the ongoing war. In addition he warned that continued military escalation could result in serious consequences on both regional and international levels.

Minister Tajani noted that Italy is making intensive efforts to bring both Iran and the United States back to the negotiating table, warning that the expansion and multiplicity of the conflict’s objectives may lead to extremely dangerous outcomes, adding that Italy is coordinating with European partners to apply diplomatic pressure aimed at de-escalation and halting the conflict.

On his part, Minister Hussein expressed his appreciation to Italy for its continued support for Iraq and its stability, stressing the importance of halting military attacks from all parties and the need to maintain Iraq’s neutrality and keep it out of the arena of conflict.

As well he warned that any expansion of the war, particularly if it leads to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, could trigger a global energy crisis and have a severely negative impact on the world economy.
