Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein Holds Regional and International Consultations and Calls for Firm Stance on Iraqi Sovereignty Violation

In light of the regional escalation following the military aggression launched by the Israeli entity on the Islamic Republic of Iran, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, intensified his regional and international communications on Friday, June 13, 2025. These efforts aimed to reaffirm Iraq’s rejection of such attacks and violations, express its commitment to regional stability, and uphold its legal and international responsibilities.
The Republic of Iraq submitted an official complaint to the United Nations Security Council, strongly condemning the breach of Iraqi airspace by Israeli aircraft. The complaint emphasized that this act constitutes a blatant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and a breach of international law and the UN Charter. The Iraqi government called on the Security Council to assume its legal and moral responsibilities by taking effective measures to prevent further violations.
As part of these diplomatic efforts, Minister Hussein held a series of phone calls with several of his counterparts to discuss the evolving situation and coordinate diplomatic efforts. Minister Fuad Hussein spoke with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mr. Abbas Araghchi, expressing Iraq’s strong condemnation of the aggression and affirming Iraq’s solidarity with the Iranian government and people.
In a call with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, both sides discussed regional developments following the Israeli attacks and stressed the importance of supporting diplomatic track and rejecting military escalation.
Minister Hussein also spoke with the Foreign Minister of the Sultanate of Oman, Mr. Badr bin Hamad Albusaidi, where they discussed Oman’s key role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. Both sides commended Muscat’s constructive efforts in fostering understanding and promoting regional stability. As well in a conversation with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Jordan Mr. Ayman Safadi, the ministers addressed the impact of the military escalation on neighboring countries. They agreed on the need for close coordination between Baghdad and Amman and rejected any expansion of the conflict.
During a call with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Mr. Hakan Fidan, the two ministers discussed developments related to the Israeli aggression and highlighted the importance of Iraqi-Turkish cooperation to prevent further escalation in the region.
Additionally Minister Hussein received a phone call from the Foreign Minister of Estonia Mr. Margus Tsahkna, during which both sides emphasized the need for diplomatic coordination to contain the conflict and support efforts aimed at regional stability.
In the same context, in a call with the Foreign Minister of Cyprus Mr. Constantinos Kombos, the two ministers exchanged views on regional developments and stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing challenges through dialogue and joint coordination.
As well Minister Hussein received a call from the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Ms. Maria Malmer Stenergard, where they discussed the ongoing escalation and reiterated the need to respect international law and the sovereignty of states.
In direct follow-up to the situation on the ground, Minister Hussein spoke with Iraq’s Ambassador to Tehran, Mr. Naseer Abdul Mohsen Abdullah, to check on the safety of Iraqi diplomatic staff and monitor the conditions of the Iraqi community residing in Iran. He stressed the importance of continued coordination with the Foreign Ministry to ensure the security and well-being of Iraqi citizens.
Through these contacts and stances, Iraq reiterates its firm rejection of any violations of its sovereignty and condemns the attacks targeting Iranian territory. Iraq continues its efforts, in coordination with regional and international partners to prevent the expansion of the conflict and to safeguard regional stability.
