Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Receives Director General of International Commission on Missing Persons

Baghdad, May 27, 2025 — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, received Ms. Kathryne Bomberger, Director-General of the International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP), on the sidelines of the Regional Experts Meeting on Missing Persons in the Middle East and North Africa, held in Baghdad.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the ICMP, particularly regarding the issue of missing persons which is a humanitarian priority for Iraq. Minister Hussein emphasized the importance of formalizing the ICMP’s legal status in Iraq and discussed the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate the Commission’s work more effectively.

Director-General Bomberger expressed her deep appreciation for the ongoing cooperation with the Iraqi government. She commended Iraq’s progress in addressing the issue of missing persons and reiterated the Commission’s desire to strengthen its partnership with Iraq through the country’s accession to the ICMP’s founding treaty, which established the Commission as a treaty-based international organization.

The two sides also discussed the challenges facing the ICMP’s operations in Iraq and the importance of taking necessary steps to regulate and support its activities.

Minister Hussein affirmed that the Foreign Ministry would continue coordinating with relevant Iraqi authorities to find appropriate legal solutions that enable the ICMP to carry out its vital humanitarian mission in Iraq effectively.
