Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein Discusses with Iranian Counterpart Ways to Strengthen Bilateral Relations and Support Nuclear Negotiations Process in Tehran

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein held a bilateral meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, on Monday, May 19, 2025, on the sidelines of his participation in the Tehran Dialogue Forum.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed prospects for enhancing bilateral cooperation between Iraq and Iran, means to bolster regional stability, and a range of issues of mutual interest.
Minister Fuad Hussein affirmed that Iraqi-Iranian relations are rooted in deep historical and geographical ties, stressing Baghdad’s commitment to advancing cooperation in the fields of security, economy, and energy, particularly in light of the prevailing regional challenges.
As well Minister Hussein underscored the importance of activating the work of joint committees between the two countries and addressing the repercussions of sanctions on Iranian gas supplies to Iraq.
In the same context, Minister Hussein reiterated Iraq’s support for the ongoing diplomatic track between Tehran and Washington, describing it as “a vital pathway to regional stability.” He noted that this matter had been part of his discussions during his recent visit to Washington, emphasizing the importance of translating negotiations into tangible, practical outcomes that serve the interests of the region’s peoples.
On his part, Minister Araghchi expressed appreciation for Iraq’s active engagement in the Tehran Dialogue Forum and affirmed Iran’s readiness to resume nuclear negotiations with the United States. He also commended Iraq’s constructive role in fostering a conducive environment for diplomacy.
The meeting further touched upon developments in regional crises, with Minister Hussein stressing the need for comprehensive political solutions that uphold state sovereignty and alleviate human suffering across the region.
