Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets his Egyptian Counterpart in Cairo to Discuss Bilateral Cooperation and Arab Summit Preparations

Cairo, May 4, 2025 – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein, met with his Egyptian counterpart, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Dr. Badr Abdelatty, in Cairo to discuss ways to deepen bilateral cooperation. During the talks, Minister Hussein reaffirmed the strong historical and cultural ties between Iraq and Egypt. The two ministers expressed their shared commitment to expanding cooperation in investment, tourism, and security, including efforts to sign a memorandum of understanding on visa exemptions for diplomatic passport holders.
Minister Hussein highlighted Iraq’s ongoing economic measures aimed at diversifying income sources and achieving electricity independence, emphasizing the strategic importance of the regional electricity interconnection project linking Iraq to Egypt through Jordan, as well he affirmed that Iraq holds significant potential, highlighting the upcoming general elections and the country’s ongoing progress toward strengthening its democratic foundations.
The two ministers also discussed the agenda of the upcoming Arab Summit, which will be held in Baghdad later this month.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed his best wishes for Iraq’s success in leading joint Arab efforts. He highlighted the importance of the trilateral cooperation between Iraq, Egypt, and Jordan, and said he was pleased with Iraq’s efforts to maintain a balanced foreign policy. He also noted that Iraq and Egypt are key countries with a shared vision on regional issues.
Both ministers agreed on regional matters and stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty of countries and not interfering in their internal affairs.
After the meeting, the two ministers held a joint press conference. The Egyptian Foreign Minister added that Egypt looks forward to the upcoming summit in Baghdad and trusts Iraq’s ability to lead joint Arab work. He also stressed the need for continued discussions on bilateral and trilateral cooperation, especially in economic and development fields.
The two ministers also discussed recent regional developments, including the war by the Israeli entity in Gaza and its actions in Lebanon and Syria.
Minister Fuad Hussein underlined the strong ties between Iraq and Egypt and the importance of preparing for the trilateral summit in Baghdad during the Arab Summit. As well he added they discussed the situation in Syria and agreed on the need to start a political process that includes all Syrian components.
At the end of the press conference, Minister Hussein added that they discussed the ongoing talks between Iran and the United States. He warned that failure in these talks could lead to serious consequences that threaten the region’s stability.
The meeting was attended by Iraq’s Ambassador to Cairo, Dr. Qahtan Al-Janabi, and the head of Media Department, Mr. Fuad Ghazi.
