Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations Meets Spanish Ambassador to Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Bilateral Relations Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Aluloom, received the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Iraq Alicia Rico Pérez del Pulgar, on 15 April 2025, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Baghdad. The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to the Kingdom of Spain Dr. Saleh Al Tamimi.
The meeting dealt with ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between Iraq and Spain across various areas, Undersecretary Bahr Aluloom commended the development in relations between the two countries, stressing that the Prime Minister’s recent visit to Madrid resulted in the signing of several important agreements that constitute a solid foundation for strengthening the bilateral partnership.
The Undersecretary also commended the Spanish government’s decision to open a consular office in Baghdad, considering it a positive step that will contribute to facilitating the procedures for granting visas and enhancing communication between the peoples of the two countries. As well Ambassador Bahr Aluloom expressed Iraq’s hope for Spain’s support in the process of removing Iraq from the European flight ban list.
On her part, the Spanish Ambassador emphasized that her country views Iraq as a key partner in the region and attaches great importance to deepening joint cooperation, praising the stability in Iraq, which has been reflected in the increasing number of Spanish tourists visiting the country.
In addition the meeting touched on prospects for joint coordination in international forums and the importance of continuing to work within a balanced vision that serves mutual interests and enhances the two countries’ presence on the international stage.
The two sides discussed the ongoing preparations for the upcoming Arab Summit in Baghdad. The Undersecretary indicated Iraq’s intention to extend invitations to a number of international figures, including the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Spain, in appreciation of his country’s positive role in supporting the Palestinian cause and its recognition of the State of Palestine.
At the end of the meeting both sides emphasized on the importance of continuing to pursue cooperation between the two countries to serve their common national interests.
