Iraq’s Representative Delivers Official Invitation from the President to Secretary General António Guterres

Iraq’s Representative to the United Nations in New York Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, met with United Nations Secretary- General António Guterres at the organization’s headquarters.

During the meeting Dr. Obaid presented an official letter addressed by the President of the Republic of Iraq Mr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, to the Secretary-General which included an invitation to attend and participate in the upcoming Arab Summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad on 17 May 2025.

In addition Representative Obaid, conveyed the greetings of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Iraq, His Excellency the Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, and His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein to the Secretary-General, affirming their keenness for his attendance, given the value his participation will add to the summit discussions.

The meeting also discussed the key issues on the UN agenda in light of regional and international geopolitical changes, as well as the priorities and concerns of the Group of 77 and China, currently chaired by Iraq, especially in the areas of financing for development, climate change, and sustainable development. The Iraqi representative affirmed the group’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with the United Nations and its specialized agencies to achieve shared goals in accordance with the principle of collective responsibility.

As well as the meeting addressed prospects for cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations in the post-ending the mandate of UNAMI phase, commending the efforts made by the mission over the past two decades and highlighted the measures and facilities provided by the relevant Iraqi government institutions to responsibly conclude the mission’s mandate by the end of this year.

On his part, the Secretary-General expressed his thanks and appreciation for the invitation, and assured his participation, as well he requested to convey his greetings to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Iraq, the Prime Minister, and His Excellency the Foreign Minister. Additionally he praised the existing cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations, which reflects the depth of the relations between the two sides, indicating that the ending the UNAMI’s mandate is an indicator of the significant progress and successes achieved by Iraq across various areas.
