Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein Discusses with Turkish Minister of Energy Developing Joint Energy Projects

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein received Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, at the Ministry’s headquarters on Sunday 16 March 2025.

The meeting dealt with issues related to electricity, natural gas and oil, as well as ways to develop existing cooperation in the energy sector to reflect the close relations between Iraq and Turkey and meet the needs of both countries.

The two sides discussed encouraging Turkish companies and providing the necessary facilities to invest in the oil and gas sector in Iraq, in addition to the possibility of supplying Iraq with electricity from Turkey to cover the deficit during peak seasons, along with the importance of completing the electricity interconnection project by preparing the necessary technical measures as soon as possible.

As well the two sides agreed to double the amount of electricity that Turkey will provide to Iraq, which will help meet part of the needs of the Kurdistan Region and the city of Mosul. In addition they discussed the renewal of the Ceyhan oil pipeline contract and emphasized the possibility of extending it southward to enhance Iraq’s oil export capacity and deliver it to European markets. 

Furthermore, the two sides touched on the possibility of importing gas from Turkey to meet the needs of Iraq’s power plants, and means to strengthen cooperation in this area.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides affirmed the importance of continued coordination and joint follow-up on issues of mutual concern.
