Iraq’s Representative to United Nations Meets Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Envoy

Iraq’s Representative to the United Nations in New York, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, received Ms. Betsa Mariana, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine and Special Envoy.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations between Iraq and Ukraine, and exchanged views on issues and resolutions raised in the United Nations related to the Russian-Ukrainian dispute, in addition to relevant political positions and changes.
The Iraqi representative indicated that his country has adopted a firm position on the crisis, despite its effects on international peace and security, as well as food and energy security, by adopting a balanced position based on standing at equal distance from all parties to the conflict, in accordance with the principles of Iraqi foreign policy and the permanent Iraqi constitution, while calling for resolving these problems between the two countries through peaceful means.
Additionally, Dr. Obaid affirmed that Iraq has continuously sought to find a solution to this crisis through diplomatic means, calling on both parties to sit at the negotiating table to reach consensual and sustainable solutions, outlining that Iraq was part of the Arab Ministerial Contact Group that exerted concerted efforts, through consultations and contacts with the concerned parties, to find permanent diplomatic solutions to preserve international peace and security.
The representative of Iraq reiterated the need to avoid escalation and his country’s support for peaceful solutions. On her part, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine expressed her understanding of Iraq’s position in this regard.
