Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets Mauritanian Defense Minister in Munich to Discuss Regional Developments and Enhance Bilateral Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with Minister of Defense, Retirees and Martyrs’ Children of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania Mr. Hanena Ould Sidi, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany on 15 February 2025.
During the meeting, Minister Sidi inquired about Iraq’s vision of the current events in the region, especially in Syria, as well as the current situation in Iraq.
On his part, Minister Hussein gave a brief presentation on the internal situation in Iraq, highlighting the track of the democratic process and the ongoing preparations for the elections scheduled to be held next October. The Minister affirmed that Iraq has achieved security stability since 2017, and is now moving steadily towards enhancing economic stability and achieving development.
As well as, Minister Hussein underlined the importance of exchanging visits between officials in the two countries to enhance bilateral cooperation across various areas, especially in the security and military fields.
In the context of regional developments, the Minister expressed Iraq’s vision regarding the current events in Syria, pointing to their direct impact on security and stability in Iraq, in addition he outlined that Iraq’s position on the Syrian crisis has been consistent since the beginning, and is based on the principle of respecting the will of the Syrian people in choosing their leadership and determining the form of government in their country, and building a political process that expresses the aspirations and hopes of all components of the Syrian people.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister conveyed the invitation of the Iraqi Minister of Defense to his Mauritanian counterpart to visit Iraq, with the aim of developing bilateral relations and benefiting from Iraqi expertise in the security and military fields.
