Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets UK National Security Adviser to Discuss Developments in Syria and Strengthening Security Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with the National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Mr. Jonathan Powell, on 15 February 2025.
The meeting dealt with the complexities of the political scene in Syria, as the Minister expressed Iraq’s concern regarding the activities of Da’esh terrorist gangs within the Syrian borders. As well as Minister Hussein touched on the issue of terrorist prisoners held by the Syrian Democratic Forces, affirming that Iraq has begun receiving a group of terrorists who are Iraqi citizens, and is transferring them to Iraqi prisons.
The two sides also discussed the regional and international role in achieving peace and stability in Syria and the region. In addition the Minister reviewed the results of his meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Syrian administration on the sidelines of the Paris Conference to Support Syria, which was held recently.
Furthermore, Minister Hussein emphasized the need for the political process in Syria to include all components and spectrums of the Syrian people without marginalizing any party, expressing Iraq’s readiness to provide support and assistance to ensure the participation of all parties in achieving stability and avoiding monopoly over decision-making.
