Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein: Iraqi-Moroccan Relations are Historic and we Seek to Strengthen them across all Sectors

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein emphasized that relations between Iraq and Morocco have reached an advanced stage and it is time to develop them institutionally on both economic and commercial level. In an interview with the Moroccan Medi1 TV and Radio on Friday, February 7, 2025, in Tangier, Morocco, the Minister indicated that the reopening of the Moroccan embassy in Baghdad represented a considerable shift in bilateral relations, commending the visit of his Moroccan counterpart the Foreign Minister to Baghdad. The Minister outlined that the relations between both countries are historic, and need further deepening in various areas.
Additionally, the Minister added that the convening of the joint committee between Iraq and Morocco is imminent, as it will discuss with the Moroccan Foreign Minister the mechanisms for activating economic, cultural and scientific cooperation. Minister Hussein affirmed the existence of broad opportunities for cooperation in the banking and financial sectors and the development of tourism services, underlining that there are many common denominators that can be built upon to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.
The Minister stated that Iraq seeks to benefit from the Moroccan dimension in the African continent, as Morocco is considered a strong partner in this direction, especially in light of Iraq’s efforts to expand its presence in the African continent.
Regarding the position on regional developments, the Minister stressed that the Palestinian issue is a conscience and societal issue in Iraq, stressing Iraq’s categorical rejection of the aggression on Gaza and any attempts to displace Palestinians. The Minister explained that Iraq calls for intensifying Arab consultations to hold intensive meetings with the aim of creating a unified position, stressing Iraq’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Regarding the Syrian file, the Minister underlined Iraq’s respect for the will of the Syrian people, noting that his communication with the Foreign Minister in the new Syrian administration took place earlier, in addition he explained that Iraq is interacting with the developments in Syria, but is concerned about the growing strength of Da’esh gangs on the Iraqi-Syrian border, which poses a serious security threat. The Minister also indicated that the developments in Syria have regional repercussions, affirming the continuation of dialogue with Turkey regarding the situation there.
