Iraq and European Union Holds Fourth Meeting on Energy, Chaired by Iraqi Ambassador to Brussels

On February 4, 2025, the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq to Brussels Mr. Ahmed Tahseen Berwari, headed the Iraqi delegation participating in the fourth meeting of the Sub-Committee on Energy and Related Topics under the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Iraq and the European Union, which was held at the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels. Representatives from the Ministries of Oil, Environment, Higher Education, and Planning participated in the meeting, in addition to the representative of the Kurdistan Region in Brussels, and their counterparts from the European Commission and the relevant European institutions.
The meeting discussed a number of technical issues related to bilateral cooperation between Iraq and the European Union, especially in the areas of energy, renewable energy, environment, climate change, and ways to achieve sustainable development goals and support infrastructure projects in Iraq, as a strategic partner of the European Union.
During the meeting, the Iraqi side reviewed its efforts in developing the oil sector, diversifying the economy, and reducing the effects of climate change, in addition to the gradual shift towards renewable energies, as well the Iraqi delegation provided a briefing on the Development Road project and its strategic dimensions.
For its part the European side affirmed its commitment to continue working with Iraqi experts to support the Iraqi government’s vision in achieving economic development and enhancing political stability, in addition to developing economic partnerships between the two sides.
At the end of the meeting, the two parties underlined the importance of continuing cooperation and coordination in areas of common concern, and the readiness to prepare for holding the Cooperation Council meeting at the ministerial level between Iraq and the European Union in 2025.
