Iraq Representative to U.N Meets Under Secretary General and UNOPS Executive Director

The Representative of Iraq to the United Nations and Chair of the Group of 77 and China, Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, met with United Nations Under-Secretary-General and the United Nations Office for Project Services UNOPS Executive Director Mr. Jorge Moreira da Silva.

Dr. Obaid commended the strategic partnership between Iraq and the office, expressing his deep appreciation for the role it plays in supporting developing countries through implementing vital projects across several of the G77 countries, including Iraq, in addition he stressed the importance of strengthening these relations, expanding cooperation, and continuing to implement development projects, especially in the areas of infrastructure, humanitarian response, and capacity building to achieve the sustainable development goals, underlining the importance of continuing the strategic partnership between the G77 and the office in various areas.

Additionally, Iraq Representative affirmed Iraq’s commitment to cooperation and coordination with the United Nations Office for Project Services, and its readiness to explore new opportunities for future cooperation, which contributes to meeting development needs and achieving the sustainable development goals.

On his part, Mr. da Silva appreciated the initiatives of the Chairman of the Group of 77 and China, and the efforts to strengthen the Group’s relations with the United Nations agencies, stressing the Office’s readiness to expand cooperation and increase communication to support future projects in Iraq and the Group’s countries. As well Executive Director expressed his interest in intensifying meetings and consultations, and enhancing close coordination with the Group to consolidate joint cooperation.
