Undersecretary for Political Planning Holds a Meeting to Discuss the Initiative of “Water for Peace and Development”

Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Planning Ambassador Dr. Hisham Al Alawi held a meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters, with the attendance of the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Water Affairs Dr. Sadiq Jawad, and representatives of the Advisory Board at the Prime Minister’s Office, the National Security Advisory, and ministries concerned with with the water issue, including the Ministries of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Environment.
The meeting was also attended by the head of the Political Planning Department and representatives of several departments of the Foreign Ministry, including the Legal Department, Europe Department, Arab Department, and the Neighboring Countries Department to discuss the initiative of “Water for Peace and Development’, launched by the Political Planning Department in cooperation with the Geneva Water Hub.
At the beginning of the meeting, Undersecretary Al Alawi stressed the importance of unifying the Iraqi vision during the discussion of the action plan sent by the Swiss side to develop mechanisms for implementing the initiative, affirming the need to take practical steps to use the water issue as a platform for cooperation and dialogue between Iraq and neighboring countries, which contributes to enhancing regional stability. As well the Undersecretary pointed out that the Iraqi government pays great attention to water diplomacy, and considers ensuring Iraq’s water rights a priority in the government program of the Foreign Ministry.
Additionally, the meeting discussed of the attendees’ observations and suggestions and agreed to hold another meeting after updating the work plan to follow up on the implementation and joint coordination mechanisms.
