Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Meets his Portuguese Counterpart in Davos to Discuss Strengthening Bilateral and Economic Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Fuad Hussein met with the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of Portugal Mr. Paulo Rangel, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, on 22 January 2025. The two ministers reviewed bilateral relations between Iraq and Portugal and ways to develop them, with attaching special importance on enhancing economic cooperation.
As well they discussed prospects for collaboration in the areas of energy and investment, as Minister Hussein underlined the importance of expanding partnerships between the two countries in vital economic sectors, in addition to discussing ways to enhance cultural and educational cooperation, which would contribute to strengthening the bonds between the two peoples.
In another aspect, the meeting addressed developments in the political situation in the Middle East, where Minister Fuad Hussein briefed his Portuguese counterpart on the latest developments in the Iraqi and regional arenas, stressing the necessity of fostering international dialogue to support peace and stability in the region.
The Minister called on Portuguese companies to contribute to reconstruction projects in Iraq, indicating the availability of an encouraging and promising investment environment.
At the end of the meeting, Minister Hussein extended an official invitation to his Portuguese counterpart to visit Iraq, stressing the importance of this visit in strengthening bilateral relations and to closely observe the positive developments in Iraq.
The Minister also urged the reopening of the Portuguese embassy in Baghdad, affirming that this step will significantly strengthen cooperation between the two countries across various areas.
