Iraq’s Representative to UN Participates in the Ministerial Meeting of Security Council on Situation in Middle East

Iraq’s Representative to the United Nations in New York Dr. Abbas Kadhom Obaid, participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the Security Council on the Situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, which was chaired by the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ahmed Attaf.
Mr. Obaid delivered a statement in which he stressed the importance of highlighting the Palestinian issue as “the issue of justice and dignity for a people suffering from the longest occupation in modern history.” He stressed the need for the Council to take urgent steps to end the Israeli occupation and ensure the implementation of relevant UN resolutions. He also referred to the humanitarian tragedy suffered by the Palestinian people due to the ongoing war and siege, appreciating the international and regional efforts that resulted in a ceasefire. As well he called for the start of reconstruction efforts and providing the necessary support to the displaced.
The Iraqi representative reiterated the country’s initiative to establish an international fund for the reconstruction of Gaza, calling on the international community to support this proposal and provide the required resources. He also stressed the importance of supporting UNRWA to ensure the continuity of its humanitarian services to the Palestinian people.
In a related context, Dr. Obaid condemned the Israeli attacks on Syrian territories, stressing the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and underlined the importance of Syria not being a haven or a transit point for terrorist groups. He also renewed Iraq’s support for Lebanon’s stability, and called for the reconstruction of areas affected by Israeli military operations. At the end of his speech, Dr. Obaid affirmed Iraq’s firm position and commitment to supporting the aspirations of the Palestinian people to achieve freedom and independence, and establish their independent state with Al Quds as its capital, considering this an essential step towards achieving security and stability in the region.
