Minister of Foreign Affairs to Assistant Secretary of State: “All Political Forces Need to Review the Events that took place in Baghdad to Preserve Civil Peace”

On Monday, September 5, 2022, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Fuad Hussein, received Ms Barbara A. Leaf, Assistant Secretary of State for Middle Eastern Affairs of the United States of America, and her accompanying delegation.

During the meeting, they discussed the bilateral relations, issues of common interest, means to activate cooperation in various fields, and emphasis on supporting Iraq’s political, economic and security stability.

The Minister touched upon the political circumstances in Iraq and the violent events that occurred a week ago in Baghdad and in the “Green Zone”, noting that these events significantly affected the political process in Iraq, and all political forces need to review the events that had happened, in order to preserve civil peace, confirming that the series of dialogues should include everyone, and it is necessary to protect the democratic process as it is, and to protect societal peace.

The two sides also discussed the regional situation and the relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, and the progress of the ongoing negotiations in Vienna on the Iranian nuclear project, hoping that the two countries would reach a final agreement on this issue for the good of both countries and the region.

They also discussed the situation in Syria, where the Minister affirmed that building stability in Syria is not only in the interest of the Syrian people, but also in the interest of Iraq and the entire region, adding that the Iraqi government is working hard to support this process in all international forums.
