Electing of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq in Geneva for the Constituent Assembly Membership of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD)

The Constituent Assembly of the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) voted unanimously to elect the permanent representative of the Republic of Iraq, Ambassador Abdul Karim Hashem Mustafa, to the centre’s constituent council Membership during the meeting of the Constituent Assembly that was held virtually on 7/12/2021.
In this regard, the Permanent Representative delivered a statement in which he extended his thanks for giving him the confidence to join the Constituent Assembly of GICHD, noting that Iraq is considered one of the most heavily mined countries, improvised explosive devices, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war, emphasizing the commitment of the Republic of Iraq to fulfil its obligations in accordance with the provisions of the relevant agreements.
In conclusion, the Permanent Representative renewed Iraq’s support for the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining.
It is worth noting that the GICHD was established in 1998 and this is the first time Iraq is a member of the Centre’s Constituent Assembly, which consists of 23 donor countries and countries affected by explosive remnants of war. The centre’s works to supports the removal of explosive remnants of war, and responds to emergencies, peacekeeping, disarmament, reconstruction and development.
