Foreign Minister and His Azerbaijani Counterpart Discuss Progress of Bilateral Relations between Baghdad and Baku

On 18 June 2021, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Fuad Hussein met his Azerbaijani counterpart, H.E. Mr. Jeyhun Aziz oglu Bayramov, on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum.
During the meeting, they discussed the progress of bilateral relations between Baghdad and Baku, and prospects for enhancing joint cooperation between the two countries in a way that contributes to achieving the interests of the two friendly countries.
They stressed the necessity of convening the Iraqi-Azerbaijani joint committee in the coming months.
The two sides also discussed joint cooperation, developing the tourism aspect, supporting the Iraqi students’ file, and working to increase support in order to bridge bilateral relations, and to achieve the aspirations of their respective peoples.
For his part, Mr. Bayramov briefed the Minister on the crisis situation between the two countries, and the historical roots of the conflict.
Mr. Hussein called on the two parties of the conflict (Azerbaijan and Armenia) to resort to negotiations and adopt political solutions to resolve the dispute between them based on the principles of international law and international resolutions.
The Minister wished the two parties of the conflict to return to the negotiating table, adding that from Iraq’s previous experiences, and as a result of the region’s exposure to many wars, and in accordance with Iraqi principles, violence and war is not the best way to achieve desired goals.
At the end of the meeting, Mr. Bayramov extended an official invitation to Mr. Hussein to visit Baku in the context of strengthening bilateral relations, and to discuss ways to broaden horizons of cooperation and participation in various fields.
